DIY PAPER PENDANTS

Hey Sweethearts:)

Happy Friday:)

This week’s DIY is extremely interesting.  We are making Necklace Pendants out of paper!!!! (yes, paper). I love these pendants because once you are done making them, they look like the wooden pendants that are sold in Nairobi and even if they are not as expensive, we could make imitations of them for absolutely no cost!

Let’s not waste any more time…..

You will need:-

1.A collection of hard paper (could be from a cereal box, chocolate box or from the examples in my photos)

2.Top Coat and Nail Polish of your preferred color

3.Plain paper

4.Jump rings and Lobster hooks (you can buy a packet of these for Kshs50 each in shops on River Road)

5.Lots of chain!:) ( River Road, cant remember the price but ranging from Kshs 80-200 per meter depending on the type you want)

7. Paper Glue

8. Pliers for opening and closing the jump rings

I used this glue because its light and it dries white so it will not dilute any of the polish colors. Also because its all I had. You could use the clear one and tell me how it goes.

The Process:-

Fold a plain paper into half and draw half of your desired shape on the fold. This is to ensure that the pendant is even

Cut out the shape drawn while the paper is still folded in half . Open up the paper and this will be used as your guide.

Transfer the shape on your hard paper. Each pendant will need around 4-5 cutouts depending on the width of your paper.

These are the cutouts for the heart-shaped pendant.

Glue the cutouts on top of each other until you get preferred thickness. I layered 5 cutouts for each of my pendants.

Wait for the glue in the pendant to dry. (Give this like 30 minutes). This is how it looks stacked.

Fun part!!!!

Paint your pendant with nail polish of your preferred color, one side at a time and also do not forget to paint the sides. Place this on a protective surface so that you won’t end up getting polish on the wrong places.

Wait for like 10-15 minutes for each of the sides to dry before turning to paint the other side.

Wait for the polish to dry completely then apply the top coat in the same way you applied your polish. One side at a time and waiting for each side to dry completely before painting the other side.

This is how they look when finished.

I used a glittery colorless polish on the black one instead of the top coat. I just thought it looked waaayy prettier!

Get a slim sharp object that can drive through the stack of paper and make a tiny hole. The pendant at this point is not that hard so even a needle or pin will do. This will be the place where you will attach the chain and pendant to make the necklace.

Now to make the necklace…

Get the measurements of how long you want the necklace to be and using a pliers, cut out the excess chain.

Find the middle of that chain and attach the opened jump ring to the chain. Jump rigs are really sensitive. You need to open them with all the care in the world.

If you do not know how to open a jump ring, this is a helpful tutorial–>http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-open-and-close-jump-rings/

Attach another jump ring to the lobster hook and attach one at the end of the chain. Attach another jump ring to the other end and this will be where your lobster hook will be closing the necklace at.

You are done!

I thought to add another pendant i had lying around so that the red one would not look as plain.

This could be a very interesting activity for a sleepover or something to do with your little sister as it is super easy and fun to do.
